Ready to welcome our next new statue?

We’re thrilled to reveal plans for the tenth statue soon to be joining Scenes in the Square in Leicester Square, London’s home of film.

The King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, alongside co-star Kajol, will be unveiled in Spring 2021 and will be the first ever Bollywood statue erected in the UK.

The statue will shine a spotlight on two Bollywood megastars from one of the most successful Bollywood films of all time. Depicting a scene from the timeless and multi award-winning rom-com, Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra.

Filled with nostalgic scenes of Leicester Square from over 25 years ago, the film, often dubbed the Romeo & Juliet of Bollywood cinema, is a must-watch about two-non resident Indians, Raj and Simran, and their a star-crossed love story across Europe and India, beginning on a train from King’s Cross Station.

Plus, we’re hoping to welcome the stars, Khan and Kajol, to unveil the statue in a special show of celebration. Be the first to know and follow us on social media!

Celebrating 25 years on the big screen

Tuesday 20th October 2020 marks the 25th anniversary since the film premiered in cinemas around the world.

Instantly becoming a box-office smash hit, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, or DDLJ as it is often known, has since gone on to be the longest running Hindi film of all time. Featuring an impressive 1,274-week run at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre, only stopping in March 2020 due to COVID-19.

The film’s leading man, Shah Rukh Khan, went on to become the world’s wealthiest movie star, eclipsing Hollywood icon, Tom Cruise. He appeared in more than 80 Hindi films, including twelve alongside Kajol, with DDLJ their second collaboration.

The Leicester Square location for the statue fits fantastically as the home of the new statue, starring as the back-drop to a scene in the movie when Raj and Simran first cross paths, albeit unbeknown to one another.

Showing two of Leicester Square’s iconic cinemas, Raj is seen standing in front of Vue West End Cinema, and Simran is seen walking past the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square.

The new statue will be positioned outside the ODEON cinema honouring the nostalgic moment in the movie.
